Apple Dumping Infineon for Qualcomm?

[A] report has suggested that Apple shall be dropping Infineon and taking on Qualcomm as the producers of chipsets for its next generation Apple iPhone 5. So now there is logical reason to expect iPhone on Verizon.

The iPhone 4 will be coming to Verizon.

According to industry watchers, this change in preference of chipset producers has been a result of Apple’s collaboration with Qualcomm for its CDMA based iPhone 4. The partnership between the two has led to Apple choosing Qualcomm as the sole baseband supplier for its 5th generation i-Phone.

Sure, Apple gets access to more mobile networks with Qualcomm. They can do CDMA as well as all the stuff they have done with Infineon.

But this also has to do with Intel buying Infineon, and Apple liking to spread its hardware purchasing and manufacturing. As well as the cooling relationship between Intel and Apple over Intel’s GPU restrictions.

So it is quite likely Apple will still source Infineon parts. Just as it buys GPUs from NVIDIA and ATI/AMD. But Qualcomm are the new golden boy.
