BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS

The BlackBerry® WebWorks™ SDK for Tablet OS allows web and mobile web developers to use the SDK in combination with their development tooling of choice to develop, test and package up their web applications as BlackBerry® WebWorks™ applications for tablets. BlackBerry WebWorks applications are distributed through the BlackBerry App World™ storefront and run on the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet with access to the hardware.

Support web technology standards such as HTML5, CSS and JavaScript™. The BlackBerry platform implementation of the WebKit rendering engine is the core of the BlackBerry WebWorks platform.

Still not seeing any native OpenGL ES capabilities, or even WebGL on this. Which is a shame.

VIDEO : Demo of Blackberry PlayBook

From BGR.
Still very early days on the OS. Some bugs and a lack of complete features is very evident. No internet demo, as “no signal was available” where they were.
Love the swiping functions using the bezel though. From first impressions of an early OS I would say that the Air elements are sucking horsepower massively.

Updated Blackberry Tablet OS SDK…

Updated SDKs available as of Nov. 30, 2010, with support for Windows® 64-bit, Adobe® Flash® Builder 4.5 and Linux®

No mention of lower level support, or a real graphics API that I have seen yet.

iPad & Playbook Browser Comparison

Yes, the iPad doesn’t have Flash. We know that already.

The interesting parts of the video Bloomberg has obtained from Blackberry actually comes at the end, with the Acid3 test, and rendering demos for Java and HTML5 Canvas. Apple have something to work towards matching there. I am sure they will.

And, as Bloomberg say, do remember that the Playbook is not a finished product yet. A lot of things can go right, as well as wrong between lab videos being made and a device finally hitting the market place.

One last thought… Am I the only one out there in the blog-sphere that sees that the iPad actually presents a finished page at exactly the same time as the PlayBook?

Blackberry Tablet “SDK” Available…

Research In Motion (RIM) is extremely excited about the opportunities available with the new BlackBerry® Tablet OS and its corresponding application platform. Building on the incredible power of the QNX operating system that’s uniquely suited for tablet computing, the BlackBerry Tablet OS will lay the foundation for the future while preserving the key investments that have made the BlackBerry platform so successful.

Having a look at the getting started guide now. But bearing in mind that it’s just for Adobe AIR apps I might wait until they release the real SDK.

I warned Palm about this approach.

The OS Doesn’t Matter…

Today, there’s only one operating system: Unix. (Okay, there are two, but we’ll get to that.) This is why I contend that the OS doesn’t matter—or that we need to take another look at the word’s content, at what we mean when we say ‘Operating System’.

Jean-Louis Gassée stating the obvious. But he is right. A good read.

The only exception is Windows. Initially built on top of DOS, Microsoft painstakingly added version after version, always striving for backward compatibility while, at the same time, adding new features. It didn’t always work well (who wants to remember Windows Me and Vista?) but it worked well enough because Microsoft never gave up. They fixed mistakes that they claimed didn’t exist, and now we have the well-respected Windows 7. (Inevitably, critics will say that Microsoft wouldn’t have gotten away with such a tortuous path if it weren’t for its vigorously enforced monopoly.)

Unrelated : It’s interesting (read: irritating) to me that Microsoft are also the only Smart Phone manufacturer who are going with their own proprietary Graphics API.

Blackberry Tablet Application Development

There are currently two application development approaches for the BlackBerry Tablet OS:

  • Web Applications with HTML5 — Developers will be able to create compelling applications using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript®, which leverage the WebKit rendering engine.
  • Web Applications with Flash — Leveraging Adobe’s tools, developers will be able to create visually rich applications using Flash 10.1.

Oh dear. Sounds like Palm all over again.

  • Reliable, high-performance kernel engineered for multi-core hardware
  • Multi-threaded POSIX OS (Portable Operating System for Unix) for true multitasking

What is going to be inside this thing (exactly)? And how long is the battery going to last?

Clinton Spouts Double-talk on Blackberry Issue…

Clinton described the situation as a “complex set of issues” and said that the US was working on a solution with several countries.

It’s only complex because the US is scrambling to try and find a way to justify them keeping their unfettered access to RIM’s customer’s data, whilst giving other countries as little access as possible.

“We are taking time to consult and analyze the full range of interests and issues at stake because we know that there is a legitimate security concern, but there’s also a legitimate right of free use and access,” she said. “So I think we will be pursuing both technical and expert discussions as we go forward.”

Give them the same access as the US and UK have to the data and they’ll shut up.

It’s simple. But I doubt a politician could ever see that.

Blackberrys to Go Dark in Saudi Arabia too…

Saudi Arabia ordered a ban of BlackBerry services starting Friday, the latest government to threaten phone maker Research In Motion Ltd. over access to customer data.

RIM is being pressured by officials in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India and other countries for greater access to the encrypted information sent by BlackBerry devices. The U.A.E. said Sunday it would prohibit most BlackBerry services starting Oct. 11.

In a statement Tuesday, RIM said it can’t give access to encrypted data and doesn’t give any one government special treatment. “Any claims that we provide, or have ever provided, something unique to the government of one country that we have not offered to the governments of all countries, are unfounded,” it said.

Do RIM honestly expect us to believe that the US and the UK do not have the ability to monitor Blackberry messaging?

Because if that is what they are saying, I don’t believe them.
