VLC Developer Rémi Denis-Courmont confirmed that Videolan sent a copyright infringement notice to Apple about the iOS version of its popular video playing app, VLC. The notice targets the DRM-based distribution method of the App Store and its restrictive terms and conditions. VLC is distributed under a GNU General Public License (GPL), an open source and free software license program that does not allow the restrictive policies of the iTunes App Store. By tightly controlling how VLC is distributed, Apple’s App Store violates this GPL and Videolan was compelled to notify Apple.
Apple will not comply with this request. So their only option is to remove it.
If you want VLC on your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch then I suggest you go get it now.

I almost wept when this was released as an iPad only app. Great to see it has now been updated for Neon based iPhones and iPods.
Among the enhancements is “Much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimisations”. Neon ASM instructions on Apple’s newer ARM CPUs are very well suited to media optimisations.
Available for free from iTunes here.

After several month of porting, we are proud to announce the release of VLC for the iPad! This application stands out for two reasons. First, it will be available for free on the AppStore. But that’s not all. VLC is an OpenSource project. We are currently preparing our patches for submission to the main VLC tree. And obviously, we will release our current working tree when the app will hit the AppStore.
If everything goes well, VLC for the iPad should be available next week.
VLC is by far the best media player for any platform.
In fact, it’s the only one I use.
I don’t see any reason why Apple won’t approve it, given the other media apps they have approved recently.
Hope they hurry up with an iPhone and iPod Touch version.
