AnandTech : 11″ & 13″ MacBook Air Review

AnandTech quite simply do the best hardware reviews these days.

I really like the form factor of the 11-inch MacBook Air. It’s great to carry around. It’s like an iPad for people who have to get real work done. I just wish it was faster. If Intel made a 32nm Core 2 Duo, clocked high enough the 11 would be perfect. I guess that’s what Atom is eventually supposed to be, but right now the performance is just too low. Intel appears to have been too conservative with Atom. Perhaps Bobcat and ARM’s Cortex A15 will light a fire under Intel’s Atom team.

I think Intel may be too late. I am still of the opinion that next generation ARM based SoCs are heading to the MacBook Air in the not too distant future.

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a game where you mine stuff and make it into other stuff. In Survival mode, which is mostly what the people who are talking about it are talking about, it’s a single player game set in a vast algorithmically generated landscape of beaches, mountains, and plains. Everything in the world is made of blocks, and every block can be “mined”, which will remove it from the world and convert it to a resource the player can use.

Great first hand account of getting to grips with Minecraft…

Survival mode is so-called because making it through your first night is an act of courage, ingenuity and luck. Minecraft‘s day cycle is ten or so minutes long, and as the sun sets squarely in the sea, and the stars prick through the sky, the nightlife turns nasty.

I you are curious about the breakout Indie hit, and want to know what it’s all about, and whether you want to invest the time in exploring it’s cool world.. this is the article to read.

AnandTech Review the new iPod Touch…

Apple advertises the rear facing camera as being able to record 720p video, however that’s not exactly true. Photos are shot at 960 x 720 but video is shot at 1280 x 720. Apple appears to be using a 960 x 720 sensor to cut costs, but upscaling video to 1280 x 720. Apple’s scaler seems pretty good, the bigger problem is the sensitivity of the image sensor.

The pricing guarantees Apple is going to continue to have incredible quarters going forward. Apple found sneaky ways to reduce the total BOM (bill of materials) cost on the new iPod Touch. A cheaper chassis compared to the iPhone 4, no GPS, less DRAM on package (256MB vs. 512MB), a cheaper screen and a worse imaging sensor. Granted the iPod Touch is significantly less expensive than the iPhone 4, particularly if you take into account the AT&T contract you need for the latter. At least the new iPod Touch was on par with the iPhone 4 as an MP3 player, which is important given this is an iPod.

The bottom line is that the new iPod Touch is not an iPhone 4 without the phone, it’s more like an updated iPod Touch – maybe even an iPod Touch 3.5. It’s not bad but it’s not great either. You have to set your expectations accordingly.

As always, a grown up and objective review of Apple gear.

Benchmarks comparing the iPhone 4′s performance to that of this new iPod Touch, show that the new iPod is just a hair slower than the iPhone 4 overall.

Published : Apple App Store Review Guidelines…

Nothing in there that isn’t already common sense knowledge, really…

It is now clear why App Review times are slipping hopelessly at the moment. Apple’s App Store Gnomes have been busy with Pages making the App Store Review Guidelines Document…

We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn’t do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted.

So did Shoemaker have a hand in these guidelines? Oh, the irony…

If your app is rejected, we have a Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps.

Good to know. Hope they actually answer emails.

Apps that duplicate apps already in the App Store may be rejected, particularly if there are many of them

I would hate to be the last one in line with a revolutionary new iPhone Flashlight App.

This is a living document, and new apps presenting new questions may result in new rules at any time. Perhaps your app will trigger this.

You are building your apps on quicksand.

Apps containing pornographic material, defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings”, will be rejected

No porn.

Apps that include games of Russian roulette will be rejected

iPhone 4 : Daily Telegraph Australia Review

I’ve been using the iPhone 4 for nearly a week to make calls, send and receive emails and surf the web from various places around the city and suburbs.

Is the antenna an issue? No it’s not.

Have I dropped calls? No, I have not.

Have I noticed an impact on the device’s performance? No.

Sounds like he got one from the same batch as everyone I know.

Perhaps the air in Asia is just more adept at carrying radio signals?

Or maybe a certain brand of “air” is not so good at carrying radio signals in the US?

Engadget’s iPhone 4 Review : Some great pictures…

Two shots on the first page show very clearly how good the Retina Display is. The first one makes the icons on the home screen look exactly like they are stickers on a kid’s toy, which was my first impression of the display…

And right after that shot they have a great side by side comparison of an identical icon on an older iPhone’s display next to that of an icon on the iPhone 4′s Retina Display.

A very thorough review. Well worth a read if you haven’t actually got an iPhone 4 in your hands… yet.

All we need now is iFixit to rip one apart… I have heard it’s happening right now.
