iOS 4.2 Available Today : Find my iPhone now Free

CUPERTINO, California—November 22, 2010—Apple® today announced that iOS 4.2, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, is available today for download for iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch®. iOS 4.2 brings over 100 new features from iOS 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 to iPad including Multitasking, Folders, Unified Inbox, Game Center, AirPlay® and AirPrint.

“iOS 4.2 makes the iPad a completely new product, just in time for the holiday season,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Once again, the iPad with iOS 4.2 will define the target that other tablets will aspire to, but very few, if any, will ever be able to hit.”

Find my iPhone is now free, but there is a caveat…

The Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now free to use without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing device.* The Find My iPhone app is a free download on the App Store℠ and lets users easily locate a missing device on a map and have it display a message or play a sound. Users can even remotely lock or wipe data from a lost device to protect privacy.

*The free Find My iPhone feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation).

10.6.5 : Getting AirPrint to Work…

First of all, I would strongly suggest waiting until you get a release version of iOS 4.2 on your devices. Things may well change at that point.

However, if you have already installed OS X 10.6.5 and AirPrint does not work for you, and you are an impatient little thing, here is a way to get it to work…

[Y]ou’re going to have to pull some files from a prerelease version of 10.6.5.

The files you need are:

If you migrate those from a 10.6.5 prerelease build (there seem to be many floating around torrent sites and file sharing sites – build 10H542 works; naturally I can’t link you to the files themselves, sorry!) to your machine you’re just one step away from having AirPrint working.

The final key thing is you have to remove and re-add your printer in the Print & Fax preferences pane. Once you do that (and share your printer in the Sharing preferences pane) it should show up on any iOS devices that support AirPrint.

Rumour : AirPrint Crippled From Launch?

We have been told from a few Mac developers that a few days ago Apple removed all the references to printing via OS X 10.6.5 and PCs both from Readme files and other online documentation posted in the iOS developer center. It seems like all that’s now mentioned in the release notes are the aforementioned HP networked printers, as if the shared printing option never existed.

If true it kind of kills 90% of the appeal of AirPrint.

Other developers chimed in, and claimed Apple removed the feature due to its instability and incompatibilities. Others confirmed that the feature is still working on iOS 4.2 GM through the previous 10.6.5 beta posted on the iOS dev center, and it even works under the Simulator. No word about the 10.6.5 seeds Apple released in the past days. You can read the threads here and here.

AirPrint is one part of iOS 4.2 that I’ve had nothing but success with.

Obviously we won’t know for sure until OS X 10.6.5 and iOS 4.2 are released, but if Apple really removed support for AirPrint via shared printers — it’ll become a lot less useful for most users.

No shit!

Apparently Apple’s Tech Support confirmed that the feature has been “cancelled” :

Support for AirPrint on Windows and Mac has been cancelled. We will be in contact with you if another opportunity arises in the future.

UPDATED : iOS 4.2 Beta Available Now…

Apple® today announced that it is releasing a beta version of its AirPrint wireless printing for iPad™, iPhone® and iPod touch® to members of Apple’s iOS developer program today, and that AirPrint will be included in the free iOS 4.2 software update in November. AirPrint automatically finds printers on local networks and can print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi without the need to install drivers or download software. HP’s existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices.

From Apple PR.

UPDATE : A Beta version of Mac OS X 10.6.5 is also being made available in the iOS Developer area so that developers can test AirPrint.
